Ikalto Winery
A continuation of the centuries-old Georgian Tradition
Our Heritage
Born of the Ikalto Academy
Winery Ikalto was born from an ancestral affection for viticulture and winemaking - a love carried down through generations of a family of immemorial Georgian heritage. Georgia has always been remarkably rich in tradition, yet the art of winemaking stands apart from all the rest. So highly was it regarded that it was once a separate field of study at the medieval Ikalto Academy, the seat of learning that gives our winery its name and its purpose.
Ikalto Winery is a family-run winery deeply rooted in Georgia’s rich winemaking heritage, with traditions dating back to the 19th century. Located in the historic villages of Ruispiri and Ikalto, our 65 hectares of vineyards are planted with Georgia’s finest local grape varieties, including Rkatsiteli, Saperavi and Kisi. We blend ancient Georgian winemaking techniques, such as traditional qvevri aging, with advanced European technologies to produce wines of exceptional quality. Our dedication to viticulture is reflected in each bottle, honoring the legacy of our ancestors while at the same time using innovation to create wines that celebrate the unique terroir of our land.
Today the founders remain personally involved in every step of the process, from vine to bottle. Ancient Qvevri winemaking and modern European technology coexist here - not as opposites, but as two expressions of the same commitment. Working in full compliance with international standards, we craft wines that honour the past while speaking to the present.
The Estate
65 hectares between two villages.
Ruispiri & Ikalto, Kakheti
Our cellar stands on the very site where our ancestors once shaped and fired Qvevri, the essential vessel of Georgian wine; fragments of the original kiln can still be found nearby, and we work to preserve and restore that legacy. Spread across 65 hectares between the villages of Ruispiri and Ikalto, the estate cultivates endemic varieties - Rkatsiteli, Saperavi, Kisi, Khikhvi, and Kakhetian Mtsvane - vinified using both traditional Georgian and classic European methods.
The Rare Grape
Khikhvi
Also known as Janaani
A rare and precious variety renowned for its complex aromas and delicate flavors - embodying the soul of Georgian winemaking in a single grape.
