Georgian wine PDO
Okhureshis Usakhelouri
3 min
Overview
Usakhelouri is one of Georgia's smallest and most tightly defined Protected Designations of Origin, producing naturally semi-sweet red wines from the rare indigenous Usakhelouri (უსახელაური) grape. The name translates as “nameless,” reflecting the grape's ancient origins and the mystery surrounding its early history.
Cultivated on a handful of steep mountain terraces in Lechkhumi, Usakhelouri yields very small quantities of deeply aromatic wine. Its naturally high sugar levels are balanced by altitude-driven acidity, resulting in a style that feels refined and fresh rather than heavy, setting it apart from other semi-sweet reds.
Geography & climate
The Usakhelouri PDO is located in the Tsageri municipality of Lechkhumi and includes vineyards around the villages of Okureshi, Zubi, and Isunderi along the Tskhenistskali River valley. Vineyards sit at elevations between 450 and 700 meters on steep, terraced slopes.
Soils are primarily limestone and shale, contributing to good drainage and mineral tension. The climate combines humid subtropical conditions with strong mountain influence, bringing warm days, cool nights, and long autumns that allow grapes to ripen slowly while retaining freshness.
Authorized grape varieties
- Usakhelauri - 100%
Usakhelouri is one of Georgia's rarest grape varieties, with total vineyard area estimated at fewer than 10 hectares nationwide.
Wine styles & characteristics
- Color: deep ruby with violet hues
- Aroma: rose petal, wild strawberry, cherry, and subtle spice
- Taste: medium-bodied, naturally semi-sweet, with a silky texture and bright acidity
- Alcohol: typically 11-12%
- Aging: stainless steel or neutral oak to preserve aromatic purity
Usakhelouri wines are defined by fragrance and balance, offering sweetness that feels integrated rather than pronounced.
Taste profile
- Aromas: wild rose, raspberry, red cherry, and gentle floral notes
- Palate: smooth and fresh, with sweetness countered by lively acidity
- Finish: long and elegant, leaving floral and mineral impressions
Despite its natural sweetness, Usakhelouri finishes clean and lifted, behaving more like a finely tuned dry red than a dessert wine.

Summary
Usakhelouri PDO (უსახელაური) represents the most delicate and scarce expression of Georgian semi-sweet red wine. Shaped by altitude, steep terrain, and an exceptionally rare grape, it offers perfume, precision, and natural balance. More than a symbol of rarity, Usakhelouri reflects the quiet discipline of mountain viticulture and the elegance that can emerge from restraint.
