Overview

Kotekhi is a Protected Designation of Origin in Kakheti, recognized for dry and naturally semi-sweet white wines made primarily from Rkatsiteli (რქაწითელი), with smaller amounts of Kakhuri Mtsvane (კახური მწვანე). Located near the village of Kotekhi in the Kvareli municipality, the appellation occupies a stylistic middle ground between the crisp precision of Tsinandali and the fuller body of Gurjaani.

Historically, Kotekhi supplied both estate and cooperative wineries, earning a reputation for consistency, balance, and everyday reliability. Today, it stands as a classic expression of Kakhetian white wine - clean, honest, and firmly rooted in place.

Geography & climate

The Kotekhi PDO lies on the right bank of the Alazani River in the Kvareli municipality, at elevations ranging from 300 to 550 meters above sea level. Vineyards stretch across gentle foothills and alluvial plains beneath the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus.

Soils are primarily clay-limestone with pockets of sand and gravel, offering good drainage while retaining enough moisture for steady ripening. The climate is continental and moderately humid, with hot summers, cool autumns, and pronounced day-night temperature variation that preserves acidity alongside ripeness.

Authorized grape varieties

Rkatsiteli provides structure, freshness, and subtle fruit, while Mtsvane contributes floral lift and softness to the blend.
