Overview
Vazisubani is one of Kakheti's most established PDOs (Protected Designation of Origin), traditionally associated with dry white wines based on a blend of Rkatsiteli (რქაწითელი) and Kakhuri Mtsvane (კახური მწვანე). Located near the village of Vazisubani, just west of Telavi, the appellation sits at the meeting point of the Alazani Valley floor and the Gombori mountain slopes, where warmth is balanced by cooling air currents.
The wines of Vazisubani are often considered a benchmark for Georgian whites. They combine Kakheti's natural generosity with a sense of restraint and precision, resulting in wines that are aromatic, structured, and consistently elegant.
Geography & climate
The Vazisubani PDO stretches across the western slopes of the Alazani Valley at elevations ranging from 350 to 800 meters above sea level, within the Telavi municipality. Vineyard soils are predominantly loamy with a high limestone content, offering good drainage and moderate vigor.
The climate is moderately humid continental, marked by warm, dry summers and noticeably cool nights. This daily temperature contrast helps preserve acidity while allowing grapes to develop full flavor and aromatic complexity.
Authorized grape varieties
- Rkatsiteli - 85-90%
- Kakhuri Mtsvane - 10-15%
While the classic blend remains the reference point, producers may also bottle single-varietal wines, allowing subtle variations in style while preserving the identity of the appellation.
Wine styles & characteristics
- Color: pale straw to light gold
- Aroma: green apple, white peach, citrus blossom, and gentle mineral notes
- Taste: medium-bodied, dry, and precise, with bright acidity and a smooth texture
- Alcohol: 12-13.5%
