Overview

Akhasheni is a Protected Designation of Origin located in Kakheti, within the Gurjaani municipality, where naturally semi-sweet red wines are made exclusively from Saperavi (საფერავი). Centered around the village of Akhasheni, the appellation is known for a softer and more rounded expression of Saperavi compared to other semi-sweet PDOs in eastern Georgia.

While sharing the natural sweetness characteristic of Kakhetian semi-sweet reds, Akhasheni emphasizes approachability. Its wines tend to be fruit-forward and smooth in texture, offering a balanced profile shaped by the warm conditions of central Kakheti.

Geography & climate

The Akhasheni PDO is situated on the right bank of the Alazani River at elevations between 350 and 600 meters above sea level. Vineyards are planted on gently rolling alluvial terraces within the Gurjaani district.

The climate is warm and moderately humid, with long summers that allow Saperavi to reach high natural sugar levels. Cool nighttime temperatures help preserve acidity. Soils consist primarily of clay-loam with limestone and gravel inclusions, contributing to both richness and balance in the finished wines.

Authorized grape varieties

Only Saperavi grapes grown within the Akhasheni microzone are permitted for wines labeled under the PDO.

Wine styles & characteristics

  • Color: deep garnet to dark ruby
  • Aroma: ripe plum, black cherry, blackberry, and subtle sweet spice
  • Taste: medium- to full-bodied, naturally semi-sweet, with smooth tannins and balanced acidity
  • Alcohol: typically 11-12%
  • Aging: most often in stainless steel; some producers use neutral oak for added roundness

Compared to Kindzmarauli, Akhasheni generally shows softer tannins, rounder mouthfeel, and a more immediately accessible style.

Taste profile

  • Aromas: ripe dark berries, cocoa, and light vanilla notes
  • Palate: smooth and cohesive, with sweetness integrated into the fruit profile
  • Finish: long and gentle, marked by ripe fruit and mild spice

The emphasis is on harmony rather than intensity, resulting in a wine that is easy to enjoy while remaining clearly regional.

Production rules

According to regulations set by Georgia's National Wine Agency:

  • Grapes must originate exclusively from the Akhasheni microzone
  • Maximum yield: 8 tons per hectare
  • Wines must be naturally semi-sweet; artificial sweetening is prohibited
  • Alcohol: 10.5-12.5%
  • Aging is typically short, with early bottling intended to preserve freshness

Food pairing

Akhasheni's round texture and fruit-driven profile pair well with a wide range of dishes:

  • Roasted or grilled pork and beef
  • Dishes with plum, pomegranate, or mild spice sauces
  • Blue cheeses and semi-hard aged cheeses
  • Chocolate desserts and fruit-based pastries

Serve slightly chilled at 14-16 °C to maintain balance and freshness.

Summary

Akhasheni PDO (ახაშენი) reflects the softer side of Kakhetian semi-sweet red wine. Made from Saperavi grown in the warm central Alazani Valley, it offers ripe fruit, gentle structure, and natural sweetness in balance. Approachable yet distinctly regional, Akhasheni remains an important expression of Georgia's semi-sweet wine tradition.

Georgian wine heritage

8000 years of living winemaking tradition

From qvevri buried beneath the soil of village cellars to the vineyards of Kakheti and Imereti, Georgian wine has always been part of daily life. Tradition here isn't frozen in the past - it's practiced every harvest, through natural fermentation, indigenous grapes, and families who continue to make wine the way they always have. This living culture, recognized by UNESCO, is why Georgia is considered the world's oldest continuously active winemaking country.
